Height: Rapid-growing native deciduous tree to 80-100 feet tall.
Habitat: Grows best in moist to well drained areas in full to part sun.
Foliage: Bright green toothed leaves that are a bit grayer on the underside.
Flowers: Catkins form before the leaves in March to April. Small brown pinecones (nutlet) stay on tree all winter.
Bark: Thin gray bark.
Natural Habitat: These trees are found in moist lower elevation forests.
Why is it good for my garden? Beautiful Fall colors. Nitrogen-fixing pioneer species on mineral soils. American Goldfinch like this plant.
