Height: This perennial sedge can grow from 6 to 40 inches tall. Water sedge spreads by rhizomes (through the root system underground) and forms a sod like area. This sedge can be used for grazing by many animals including domesticated ones.
Habitat: Grows best in moist soil and full to part sun.
Foliage: Leaves extend out of triangular shaped stem.
Flowers (Inflorescence): The top spikes on this sedge look shaggy brown where as the lower flower spikes are light green with brown striping if you look very closely. Usually only 3 to 4 seed spikes.
Fruits: This sedge produces seeds.
Natural Habitat: Found in wet boggy meadow, stream banks, and most wet places.
Why is it good for my garden? The water sedge is great for stabilizing your soil in wet areas. Since this sedge is sod forming this could be used for lawn or pasture for animals.
