Corylus cornuta - Beaked Hazelnut

Product Details

Height: Deciduous small tree or shrub that can grow from 5 to 25 ft. tall.

Habitat: Grows best in full to part sun in moist to well-drained soil.

Foliage: Bright green toothed veined leaves that turn yellow in fall. Hairy on the underside of the leaf.

Flowers: Catkin flowers droop off branches and usually stay all winter and pollinate the following spring.

Fruits: Spherical nut enclosed in a husk with a tubular extension that resembles a beak. The nuts ripen in late August and September.

Bark: Smooth gray-brown bark.

Natural Habitat: Wide spread in forest openings and thickets.

Why is it good for my garden? Nuts attract wildlife such as jays, red squirrels, and least chipmunks and are also edible to humans when roasted. Great for naturalized areas, mass plantings, and as a shrubby boarder or woodland gardens. Hazelnuts bring in Steller’s Jays to your yard.
