Why is it good for my garden? This native evergreen deserves a second look as a lush shrub that forms thickets for good bird habitat. Salal grows with rich-green leaves in shade or partial shade year round. Berries can be used to make jellies or jams, or if you’re a bird-watcher, can be left as food for visiting birds. Salal can tolerate coastal conditions and some salt spray. Band-tailed Pigeon like these berries.
