Height: This perennial can grow from 5 to 16 inches tall and grows from a bulb.
Habitat: Grows best in well drained soil in full to part sun.
Foliage: Thick, oval, green leaves grow along or near the ground.
Flowers: Purple to reddish purple flowers that look like they are inside out point downwards (shoot) to a ring of white, then yellow and black center. Flowers grow up from the bulb on a long stem with a cluster of flowers at the top. Flowers March through June.
Fruits: Small capsules of seeds form after the flower fades.
Natural Habitat: Found in woods and prairies west of the Cascades.
Why is it good for my garden? This gorgeous bulb is one of the first flowers to bloom in spring so it is great to add to garden for early color. It dies back in summer so does not need much in the way of watering.
