Why is it good for my garden? Douglas fir is a pretty evergreen to have in your yard. They do get pretty large so give them space. Douglas fir can tolerate drought because it has a long tap root that grows down in search of water. This tree is used as a Christmas tree and can endure being in a container for a few years. Birds and squirrels enjoy the seeds. This regal tree is the second tallest conifer in the world. It is self pruning (though slow). Douglas fir is somewhat of an icon tree species in the Pacific Northwest and is a wonderful ornamental tree with a recognizable silhouette, inviting sprays of fluffy needles, and rusty-orange puzzle-piece textured bark.
