Native shrub, to 15ft tall. Showy drooping pink flower clusters with edible berries. Full to part sun, dry well-drained soils.
Height: This thornless, deciduous shrub can grow from 3 to 15 ft. tall.
Habitat: Grows best in moist to well drained soil and full to part sun. Drought tolerant once established.
Foliage: Alternate, round, lobed, toothed, green leaves that turn bright colors in fall.
Flowers: Bright pink to light pink and white, 5 petaled flowers hang in large clusters and bloom March to June.
Fruits: Blue to black round berries that have a white powder on them. Edible but not that tasty.
Bark: Reddish brown bark.
Natural Habitat: Found dry open woods, rocky slopes, disturbed sites like roadsides and clearings; low to mid elevation.
Why is it good for my garden? Brilliantly bright showy pink-red flowers are among the first flowers to show in spring and hummingbirds love this early food. Brings in other pollinators with the flowers and wildlife with the berries. Red flowering currant works well for sunny rain gardens and is a versatile shrub that is easy and adaptable for many gardens. Purple Finch like the soft buds and soft nectar of this plant.
