Height: This non native cultivar of our native Western Red Cedar is fast growing to 20 feet tall. Selected for the shorter height.
Habitat: Grows well in full sun to part shade and moist soil but is very adaptable. This tree can tolerate may conditions including drought, clay soil, and urban pollution.
Foliage: Dark green to blue green scales that grow together to form branches.
Fruits: Small brown cones.
Bark: Brown scaly bark.
Natural Habitat: None, because it is a cultivar. Introduced.
Why is it good for my garden? The Excela Cedar is a cultivar of our native Western Red Cedar. Excelsa Cedars are used in place of the Western Red Cedar when you do not have room to put in a full size tree. Stays smaller then most evergreen trees. Good for privacy.
